Faith--On and Off the Field

A while back--okay, so only back in December of 2011, but already 2011 seems so long ago--one of my students and I were having a conversation about the US Women's Soccer Team, because we both thoroughly enjoy soccer (though, I will admit she is a bigger fan and a better follower than I).  We had this conversation after attending a Saturday daily Mass together along with another student, while we were sitting eating a very delectable brunch at one of the more famous Bostonian eateries, we had this conversation.  A day or two later, she emailed me a video of Tobin Heath (the soccer player) talking about her faith.  I would like to share said video with you:


It's always reassuring whether you're a soccer fan or not, that there are athletes out there who live their faith (and it's not only Tim Tebow).  I'm glad that there are models/witnesses out there for my girls to look up to.

Call Me, Maybe

When I was a wee little thing, I was as shy as could be!  (I still can be incredibly shy at times).  One way in which my shyness would manifest itself was in a great dislike of talking on the phone (mainly because there was no way I could hide behind my mother's leg on the phone and have her talk for me). It was simply me and the other person on the other end of the line...no barrier, no blockade, just the two of us. (No Will Smith reference intended). Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Through Ann Brashares' series entitled The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Ken Kwapis' film of the same title, many young women have been learning what it means to be a "sister" to one another.  From learning about what it means to trust your friends to learning how to continue to invest in each other from across the country, Tibby, Lena, Bridget, and Carmen grow in friendship and sisterhood over the course of the series.  I grew up with these characters and admired their camaraderie; however, I have been learning more and more what their friendship was actually missing.  Their friendship was missing the solid foundation of Jesus Christ. At FOCUS' New Staff Training (NST), we are divided into groups of about eight women or men, called colleges.  This year I was blessed to live and pray alongside seven other women in the College of Saint Catherine of Siena (pictured below).  And it was here that my definition and understanding of sisterhood began to deepe...

A Night To Die For

The lights were dimmed.  The candles lit.  The evening was brisk.  The smell of fall filled your nose.  Halloween approached.  As students were preparing for the upcoming All Hallow's Eve, a few decided to celebrate in a slightly different fashion with us, by stepping back to the year 303AD... The women as they entered the year 303AD As the twenty women gathered in the basement of Immaculate Conception Church, we handed them a character card, a prop, and some simple instructions--they were to discover who killed who at this Martyr Mystery Party!  It was a night to die for!  As they crossed the threshold from the hallway into the Gathering Room, the women entered into a different time--a time of Christian persecution, a time of martyrs, and a time of the Roman Empire... Stepping into character, the women gathered around the "concession stand" of a Roman arena, where the poor and rich a like would gather for gladiators and lion feastings!  ...
