In Rachel's Words

I asked one of the students who attended FOCUS's Student Leader Summit to write up a little blurb about their experiences.  Rachel, who is a Junior in Course 2 (Mechanical Engineering), has an affinity for writing and it brings her to life so she joyously accepted the task.  Rachel is currently leading a Bible Study during IAP on the Gospel of Luke and she is discipling Nahomy, a Sophomore in Course 16 (Aerospace Engineering).  And this is what she has to say:


"I can't say that Summit changed my life.  But I can say that God brought me to the people who DID change my life.  When 1200 college students and FOCUS missionaries who are on fire for Christ are in a single place, how can you NOT be moved?  These are people who are going out on their campuses and sharing God's infinite love with those who need to hear it!  And Summit brought them together and gave them new tools to go out and move the world?!  Again I ask, how can you NOT BE MOVED?

 Throughout the conference, we heard talks and gained hands-on experience preparing bible study questions, praying for each other, and so much more.  Many comments made by the speaker really resonated with me (I have a program full of them!).  But there was one sight that has stuck with me since the conclusion of Summit, and will stay with me for the rest of my life.  After one of the talks, we followed the flow of people toward the hotel lobby.  I happened to glance off to my left and as the sea of people parted, I found myself looking upon a trio praying together.  And my heart soared.  Here were three people already putting the techniques we'd learned into practice.  They were unashamed, unabashed by the mass of people flowing by them.
The sight strengthened me.  It was God's way of telling me, "You are not alone.  I am with you unto the end of the age.  When you don't think you're strong enough, or you don't know what to say, take heart!  I am strong enough; I will give you the words to say."  The people at Summit reminded me of the fact that God can move mountains if you ask it of Him.  And I may not be qualified for this task God has set before me, but after all, God doesn't call the qualified.  He qualifies the called.
Can you hear Him calling?  It's time to move mountains...it's time to set the world on fire for Jesus Christ."

When I was a wee little thing, I was as shy as could be!  (I still can be incredibly shy at times).  One way in which my shyness would manifest itself was in a great dislike of talking on the phone (mainly because there was no way I could hide behind my mother's leg on the phone and have her talk for me). It was simply me and the other person on the other end of the line...no barrier, no blockade, just the two of us. (No Will Smith reference intended). SEEK and Ye Shall Find

While those five little words--"seek and ye shall find"--should probably draw to mind the Bible verse Matthew 7:7 (Ask, and it will be given you, seek, and you will find, etc.), the first thing that comes to mind is Ella Fitzgerald's "Someone to Watch Over Me."  If someone simply says, "Seek and ye shall find" automatically I hear the soft piano and the soothing pulsation of Ella's voice flowing between the words.  I hear her emphasize "seek" and "ye" and I begin to drift into the following lyrics, "So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind."  And the song continues to play in my head... Needless to say, every time someone at FOCUS's recent SEEK Conference in Orlando, FL, mentioned Matthew 7:7, and began to read, "seek and ye shall find," my mind had gone down the river of musical lyrics, not stopping until the song had ended.  (At which time I was completely lost as to what the actual...

Modern Womanhood and My Moment in It

"Thirty, flirty, and thriving..."  The wish that Jenna uttered on her "disastrous" 13th birthday in 13 Going on 30  ...and the wish that came true when some magic dust flutters onto her head... (Shout out to my OLHC girls who watched that movie a million times with me).
